Yuna River Basin Irrigation Project | Dominican Republic

2023 / 2024

Country: Dominican Republic – Provínces of La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte and María Trinidad Sánchez

Client: IDB

The Yuna River watershed, located northeast of the Dominican Republic, is the largest in the country, occupying an area of 5,498 Km.2 (11% of the national territory). The Yuna-Camú and Bajo Yuna irrigation districts, with about 16% of the irrigated area in the country, were built between 1960 and 1980 and supply 19,500 users. The works planned in the Yuna basin as part of the Project include Yuna – Cañabón, Camú, and Rincón Irrigation Systems; improvement of the Masipedro water transfer; storage capacity expansion via dredging (sediment extraction) of the reservoir of the Rincón dam and the improvement of Aglipo I and II dams. Additionally, as part of the climate change adaptation strategy, several flood control works are planned in the lower-Yuna basin. Similarly, nature-based solutions ared proposed for the upper-basin. IDB retained JGP to develop the following studies:

  • Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the irrigation improvements and of the Climate Change Adaptation Program.
  • E&S Management Plans (ESMP) of the irrigation and flood control improvements.
  • Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), in alignment with IDB’s Environmental and Social Performance Standards (ESPS 1 to 10);
  • Support to the responsible entity (INDRHI) in the Consultation process with Program’s stakeholders.
