There are 23 irregular settlements (favelas) in the municipality of São Bernardo do Campo in Greater São Paulo. They are home to a total population of over 100.000 and occupy unstable slopes, flood plains and other high-risk areas.
JGP´s services were retained in order to develop a Comprehensive Risk Analysis for the 23 areas. Four classes of risk were established on the basis of probability and severity criteria and risk zoning maps were developed accordingly. Subsequently under a second assignment, JGP was responsible for assisting the local government with the establishment of priorities and with preliminary design development of emergency works in the most critical sectors. These included structural and non-structural slope stabilization works, urban drainage, canals and other flood control works, as well as relocation of population.
