The Amaila Falls Hydropower Project in Guyana was planned to meet approximately 100% of the country’s energy demand. It would have an installed capacity of 153 MW and form a 27 Km.2 reservoir in a pristine and mountainous region in the Guyana Shield, an area which had not been previously studied. A major contract was awarded to JGP for the development of the Project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) including seasonal biodiversity surveys in the reservoir area and along the alignment of the 270-Km. transmission line, as well as other baseline studies and consultation with indigenous groups. This work required mobilizing a team of 86 participants, including more than 30 Brazilian professionals. Reaching the project site from São Paulo was a 6 to 7-day journey.
JGP´s ESIA was developed to comply both with national regulations and IDB requirements. The project was approved but never implemented due to financial aspects.
